ABOUT
KATHY
FAUSTINA GABRIEL

I was born in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, on the island of Trinidad. I am the third of six children. My spent my childhood years living with my grand parents on a farm and on cultivated land in the countryside. Although my grand mother had little education-she couldn’t read or write- she was a community organizer and very politically active. After completing my daily chores, my added responsibilities were to read the daily news papers for my grand mother and to help her with, not only her political activities, but her community organizing as well - hence my appetite for politics and community organizing. I immigrated to this great country in 1970 with the goals to find a job, further educate myself and to get involved in the “American Political System”,

Two weeks after my arrival in this country, I landed my first job at a local department store. This job was short lived in that I moved on and started a career in the Banking Industry. My employment then included Harbor National Bank; Shawmut Bank, in a part time basis; Unity Bank and Trust; and the Federal Reserve Bank, also on a part time basis. There were times, as an Assistant Head Teller, I was accountable, daily, for handled over a million dollars, in cash, and without discrepancies.

In 1977 I applied for and was employed as an Administrative Assistant in the Mayor’s Office of Human Rights and later became the Office Manager for the Minority Business Office. Here I improved on my administrative skills and experienced how Government worked. After four years of working at the Boston City Hall, I applied and was successful in obtaining a position as a Courtroom Procedures Clerk in the Clerk’s Office at the Suffolk Superior Court for Civil Business. Subsequently, I was promoted to the position of Case Coordinator. My responsibilities included extensive docketing, customer service case management and training new employees. I continued working there for thirty-three years until my retirement

I attended U-Mass Boston and graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science. I continued my education at Harvard Extension School where I have completed courses toward a master's degree in government. Some of courses I took at both Universities involved law and justice which not only gave me a clear understanding of the law and how it works, but they were extremely helpful to me in fully understanding my job in the Clerk’s Office.

Whilst working and educating myself, I got involved in community and political organizing. I was twice a Candidate for State Representative for the 6th Suffolk District.

In 1989 I became a Naturalized U.S. Citizen. This was a proud moment for me.

I now had the opportunity to exercise my right to vote and that Idid with a deep sense of pride. My job experiences, my political experiences, my educational achievements and me, being a U.S. Citizen, gave me the momentum to further my community outreach from political campaigning to social services.

I became a member of our neighborhood crime watch group where we, the members, worked with our local politicians, some City and State Agencies along with our local Police Department in an attempt of bridging the gap between police and youths in our community to create a safe neighborhood. I also conducted Citizenship Drives and help green-card holders to become US Citizens. I conducted six-week courses to prepare these applicants for US Citizens to be successful in their interviews with INS. When successful and upon their swearing-in I encouraged and helped these new citizens to register to vote.

My many years of experience in the Clerk’s Office at Suffolk Superior Court-Civil, along with my educational achievement, my administrative skills, my experience in political and community organizing, and my experience and skills in banking are all quality skills that make me a practical candidate for Clerk of the Suffolk Superior Court for Civil Business.
